Improv and Failure

Emma Stone, Improv and Failure

In a September interview with Stephen Colbert La La Land actress Emma Stone spent time discussing her lifelong issues with anxiety and how acting and improv helped her.  In a 2012 interview with Vogue Emma explained, “Comedy was my sport. It taught me how to roll with the punches. Failure is the exact same as success when it comes to comedy because it just keeps coming. It never stops.”

And that’s life. Life never stops. It just keeps coming.

I reflect often on the wisdom of Robert Frost, “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life — It goes on.” I have failed, many times. I have experienced significant professional and personal setbacks, failures that could have felt like the end if I let them, but they were not. Life did not end. Life kept coming. Life, explains Robert Frost, goes on. How you approach failure, when it happens, makes the difference. Practice mindfulness and resilience in the face of “failure” — I have, and you can too.

Get excited to FAIL …because, it happens.
